Every drug reaction is a conversation with the body. A medication doesn’t just “act”; it communicates with cellular components via receptors or enzymes to trigger a specific response.
Understanding that interaction is the foundation of pharmacology regardless of healthcare discipline. For the EMT, this foundation is rooted in knowing the drugs we carry and are responsible for administering. You’l need to know the drug name (trade/ generic), indications (why we give it), mechanism of action (how it works), contraindications (the reason we cannot give a medication even when it’s indicated), side effect (the bonus stuff it does), and the dose (how much you are to give).
The good thing is you don’t need to know that for every drug ever…just the ones you’re responsible for administering or assisting with (hating ending sentences with prepositions).
This audio is a broad and basic overview. It doesn’t go into grave detail but does give a blueprint/ map so you can begin your studies.
